Colored Angora Goats

Goats have returned to HGF!  After 4 years of not having any goats on the farm, we've decided to start breeding colored

angora goats again.  Angora goats produce mohair.  Mohair is a fiber, similar to wool in principle but entirely different

in its texture, character, and luster.  Angora goats have been raised for centuries with fine 'goat hair' being used in the making

of sacrament cloth in ancient Judea.  Angora goats are primarily white, however there has been a great deal of interest generated

by the colored angora goats for their naturally colored mohair.  Colored goats were traditionally culled as inferior, not serving

the commercial market that preferred a white fleece for dyeing and general production.  AAGBA registered white goats are

important in the continued development of the colored angora goats as the gene pool remains limited. Colored angora goats

produce mohair in varying shades of black to silver, and cream/taupe/red/brown.  Mohair readily accepts dyes, and the

colored fleeces are great for 'over-dyeing'.  We are currently focusing on the 'dominant' color family of goats.  Our foundation

animals come from Vernon & Sara Bewley(Hill Shepherd Farm, OH), Allen Mesick & Randy Shumaker (Eureka Mohair Farm, CA),

and Jackie Yerger (she originally purchased from Stacy Bonus at Lavender Hill Farm, PA).  These animals also possess genetics

from some of the best foundation stock in the country including Mohare Farm, Isa Jennings, Coon Hollow, Randall Brooks,

Cloudspun, Coon Hollow Farm, Dry Creek Naturals, Stephanie Mitcham, Scott Scheyli, and AAGBA registered whites.
